Melissa Henry is a contemporary Aboriginal artist living and creating on Yuin Country in Milton, on the South East Coast of New South Wales. She is a proud descendant of the Weilwan people of North West NSW through her father’s family and also honours her Irish heritage through her mother.

Raised on Tharawal Country in Sydney, Melissa later moved south in her late twenties, deepening her connection to the natural environment that now surrounds and inspires her daily life.

Living on Country in the bush with her family, Melissa’s artistic practice is deeply shaped by the landscapes, stories and spirit of place around her. Her work draws inspiration from the wisdom of Elders, the strength of ancestors, and the many textures, forms and rhythms found in nature. Through painting, she expresses lived experiences, emotions, memory, identity and connection — allowing each work to evolve organically and intuitively.

Melissa’s art is grounded in storytelling, healing and cultural connection. Her motivation to paint comes from a desire to foster greater awareness and understanding of Aboriginal history, while acknowledging the resilience, strength and ongoing experiences of Aboriginal people. Through her work, she hopes to create opportunities for reflection, learning and connection.

A passionate advocate for caring for Country, Melissa believes in protecting the land, waterways and ecosystems for future generations — ensuring culture can continue to survive, grow and thrive. This deep respect for Country is woven throughout her practice and shines through in every piece she creates.

Melissa hopes her art encourages people to seek out the abundance of knowledge, beauty and healing held within Aboriginal culture, and to experience a deeper connection to Country and community through her work.

Milumba, the word for shine in the local Dhurga language of Yuin Country, reflects the heart of Melissa’s practice — illuminating stories, culture, connection and care through art.
